In the context of construction materials, a vapor barrier is a layer (or multiple layers) of materials that help to control moisture permeation. In other words, they’re layers in or on your home that keep the inside of your home dry. Vapor barrier materials vary and can include paint, glass, sheet metal, rubber, plywood, or even concrete blocks. Each type of material has a specific rating (“perm”, or permeation rating) that indicates how well it functions as a barrier. Typically, vapor barriers are installed during new construction, since it can be very difficult to install a vapor barrier properly on an existing building.

It’s very important to consult a professional regarding vapor barriers, for a lot of different reasons. For one, vapor barriers are not always a good idea, depending on the climate around your home. Or, there could be too many vapor barrier layers on a home, which can essentially trap moisture inside the home, leading to a lot of complicated issues.
